Regiment | 2nd Wiltshire |
---|---|
Location | Anzio, Italy |
Entry | 0400hrs: Our patrols reported that the enemy had gone and consequently a pre-conceived plan was put into immediate operation, so that the battalion could keep in contact with the enemy. The operation went according to plan and the enemy minefields were successfully breached with very few casualties, and all coys were on their objectives before mid-day. In the afternoon the advance was resumed towards ARDEA, but 'D' Coy became pinned to the ground by shell and mortar fire and the advance did not make as much progress as was expected, but by nightfall the battalion had advanced just about 5000x, much farther than any other battalion in the division. Defensive positions were taken up during the night and patrols were sent out to contact the units on our flanks and the night passed quietly without incident, all the maintenance of the battalion going withou [sic] a hitch.
