War Diary

1944-05-26
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Anzio, Italy
Entry The day passed quietly, but in the afternoon reports came in from division stating that it was thought that the enemy would withdraw during the night, so patrols were organised to go out and see what was happening after dark, and a considerable artillery programme laid on to hinder any attempted withdrawal on the part of the enemy. A fighting patrol led by LIEUT. SMITH found the enemy still in occupation and casualties were suffered amongst his patrol from wooden box mines. Another patrol led by LIEUT. J. MOXON 'D' COY was ambushed just outside our own wire and LIEUT. MOXON and one other were made prisoners. These two were the first members of the battalion to be made prisoner since the unit came to ANZIO, the only unit in the division to possess such a record.
