War Diary

1944-05-16
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Anzio, Italy
Entry Enemy mortaring was spasmodic during the day, but the harassing programme carried out by our own 3" mortars was on a far greater scale. 2200hrs: SERGEANT BARRETT 'D' COY went out with a fighting patrol to the area where the patrol the previous night had seen enemy working parties. This patrol successfully shot up a group of about 10 men but was unable to take a prisoner. The patrol suffered no casualties in this action, but a man was again made a casualty coming through the gap in our minefield. He died of his wounds soon afterwards.
