War Diary

1944-05-14
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Anzio, Italy
Entry 0130hrs: The change over was completed without incident. The battalion is now commanded for the time being by Major A.W.S. HOOLEY vice LIEUT COLONEL E.A. HEFFORD D.S.O., who remained at 'B' Echelon for a few days rest. The positions we are in now are the same as were occupied by the battalion when it first came to ANZIO. Many improvements have taken place since we were last there however. Firstly , it is now possible to visit all coys from Bn HQ by day, as a communication trench now exists across the intervening open ground. Secondly, where formerly the positions were tucked down in wadis they are now on the slopes nearest the enemy and have sapped forward considerable distances and communication established between isolated sections by means of crawl trenches. During the day there was slight mortaring of the forward coys, but we suffered no casualties. LIEUT. J. MORLEY took a patrol from the carrier platoon down wadi to 814308 to see the extent of enemy mines and wire. LIEUT. J. SMITH of 'C' COY went out to lie up all day at approx 814309 to observe enemy movements and positions. References to appendices: Rref Map:- ITALY 1/25,000 158 IV S.E.
