War Diary

1944-05-03
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Anzio, Italy
Entry Just after stand down 2 Germans were seen quite close to 'B' Coy but disappeared before effective small arms fire could be brought onto them. Mortar fire was nevertheless brought down into the area into which they disappeared. 2100hrs: A Bn anti-tank gun was towed into a fwd position to fire 12 rounds AP and H.E. into S.W. edge of wood 7731 where previously a tracked vehicle had been heard moving about. The required number of rounds were fired and a small explosion was seen. Unfortunately mortar fire was brought down by the enemy as the gun was being towed away by jeep and one man of the covering party was killed and 1 wounded.
