War Diary

1944-05-01
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Anzio, Italy
Entry A quiet day on our own particular front with only a little shelling and mortaring. However, on another part of the divisional front in THE FORTRESS area 8331 there was bitter fighting. 2 NORTHAMPTONS were holding the area and fwd coy was driven out and four counter-attacks failed to retake the position. Fighting patrols were taken out at night to WEST of wood at 7731 by LIEUT. MAYNARD and another to the SOUTH of the wood by LIEUT. DOUGLAS. In the former, the patrol ran into an ambush whilst crossing the MOLETTA and casualties were suffered - 2 Killed and 1 missing. The other patrol returned without having met the enemy.
