Entry | [THE CROSSING OF THE RIVER GARIGLIANO. From Supplement] 0630: 1st enemy attack. This penetrated A Coy positions but was counter-attacked and driven off with the bayonet. 0830: 2nd enemy attack. Only slight penetration. Beaten off. 1000: 3rd enemy attack. This attack was successful and A Coy and the Carrier Platoon were forced back to B Coy at the WEST end of TUFO. During final attack A Coy Comd Capt J. Power was killed. It was during this last attack that Major Clark had his second escape from the enemy. He had gone forward to see A Coy and was caught in a dugout when the attack came and a handgrenade was thrown in. When he was out, the waiting GERMANS were fired at and took cover. Major Clark seized his opportunity and made a successful dash back to our own positions. 1030: Reserve Coy 2 Cameronians ordered to retake Pt 201. A & B Coys amalgamated in WEST of TUFO. 1140: After heavy artilery preparation attack started and was successful. C Coy from Pt 151 report enemy badly caught by Artillery when retreating and also cut to bits by Vickers M.G. fire. 1230: Point 201 firmly consolidated by 2 Coys 2 CAMERONIANS The amalgamated A & B Coys are to be known as B Coy and will be commanded by Major Clark. 1640: B Coy moved back to Pt 102 in Reserve. 2 CAMERONIANS relieved 2 WILTSHIRES as left forward Bn. During the night C are relieved on Pt 151 by a CAMERONIAN Coy and come back to WEST of TUFO just SOUTH of the Road with an immediate counter-attack role on Pt 201. D Coy move back to their original position in the East end of TUFO. The first fairly quiet night for five days. Remarks: During the day the first news is received of the landing SOUTH of ROME. |
