Entry | Commanding Officer adresses the Bn, and Bn prepares to move off. PM: See special GARIGLIANO RIVER CROSSING SUPPLEMENT THE CROSSING OF THE RIVER GARIGLIANO. [From Supplement] 10th Corps were to cross the River and seize and hold the high ground on the other side with the object of gaining a firm bridgehead and drawing off GERMAN Reserves from the landing SOUTH of ROME. The crossing was to be made with 56 Div on the right and 5 Div on the left near the sea. 2ND WILTSHIRES were ordered to force a crossing and seize and hold the TUFO feature 7997 - 8096. 1600: The Bn embussed at MONDRAGONE for departure to forming up place. 1915: Arrive debussing point (885912) and start march to Forming Up Place SOUTH of ROAD and EAST of HOUSES (835935). 2100: Carrier Pl covering party and taping party move down to the crossing place (834940). 2145: Bn arrives at Forming Up Place. Delay due to late arrival of boats. 2330: C Coy erect boats and carry them down to the crossing place. 2400: First boatload of A Coy - bridgehead Coy - crosses. They meet no opposition and remainder Bn start crossing. Enemy mortar and M.G. fire starts but casualties are light. This was coming from a post in HOUSES on the START LINE and B Coy quickly dealt with it taking 5 POW. References to Appendices: All Maps Refs.
