War Diary

1943-12-28
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Casoli, Italy
Entry 0630hrs: A few shells fell near the river in square 2491. 1100hrs: Pioneers report that they have removed two S Mines and two prepared charges from A Coy area. 1345hrs: A Jeep Patrol sent out to investigate the road from rd junc 1889 - FARA reported a blow at 183887. They went fwd from here on foot and found mines between bends at at [sic] 176882 and 182880. Just off the road at 182880 was a very clever booby trap. Two TELLERMINES, Mark II, were laid side by side, one of them upside down. A pull igniter was screwed into the booby trap recess of the latter mine and from that an earth coloured wire ran just below soil level across the top of both mines. No attempt was made to camouflage the loose earth on top, it was obvious that a mine was there and invited people to scratch for it, thereby pulling the wire and blowing themselves. Anyone stepping on the wire would also probably have stretched it enough to detonate the mine. Civilians informed this patrol that there were no enemy in either CIVITELLA 1787 or FARA 1687.
