| Entry | From 0030hrs Bn embarked in Assault Landing Craft and moved across STRAITS of MESSINA under heavy barrage put down by Medium and Fd Arty. "H" Hour was 0430hrs and Plan was as laid down in Operation Order No.1 BAYTOWN. In actual fact coys and even the gapping parties were landed on the wrong beaches, but this was straightened in daylight and Phase II was completed by 0730hrs. NO enemy opposition was met by Bn although a few shells burst over the sea NORTH of our beaches. Phase III was completed by 1200hrs. Light enemy air activity occurred about noon and one officer and one O.R. were wounded and evacuated as a result of bomb burst in MT area. 1800hrs. 13 Inf Bde moved NORTH to support 17 Inf Bde, who had only made contact with GERMAN stragglers. Bn arrived by march route at 2200hrs at Concentration Area E of SAMBATELLO 467548. Reference to Appendices BAYTOWN. Op Order No.1 Landing Tables Admn Instr No.1 already submitted. |
