Location D + 31 Day, [North of Fleri], Sicily
Entry 0530hrs. GERMANS open up along road with mortars and five LMGs and then pull out in transport firing a last burst from their vehicles as they leave SARRO. 0715hrs. A Coy report a number of BREDA LMGs and dumps in their area. Enemy demolitions are heard about this time from the COASTAL PLAIN where 50 Div are advancing along COASTAL PLAIN just NORTH of ACIREALE. 0800hrs. B Coy, who moved at first light, join up with C Coy. 0900hrs. A & D Coys are established in 9700 on RIGHT and LEFT of the road NORTH of "CAKE" BRIDGE at 976003. "CAKE" BRIDGE across deep water course was blown at first light, and Sappers open diversion at about 1000hrs when two 6-pdrs and a Pheasant move fwd. 0920hrs. Adv HQ is established in house and orchards WEST of ROAD JUNC 973994. 1000hrs. B Coy are ordered forward to SPUR at 017974, getting into position about mid-day. 1310hrs. Enemy arty shell fwd end of ZAFFERANA ETNEA causing slight civilian casualties.Their morale drops contrasting with the astonishing reception thay gave us early in the morning. In the afternoon D Coy Patrol contacts enemy SOUTH of MILO and withdraws without casualties. One Mark VI Tank is identified. 1700hrs. 1 Bn GREEN HOWARDS ex 15 Bde pass through Bn and by daylight 11 Aug 43 are across WADI at MILO 984034 where they are held up mainly because the BRIDGE is blown and they cannot get their A/T guns across to the fwd Coys. Bn posns now are; Bn HQ 973944; A & D Coys astride ROAD NORTH of BRIDGE in ZAFFERANA ETNEA; B Coy at 017974; C Coy on SPUR at 9699.
