| Entry | [25th July - 2nd Aug] Bn forms flank guard for 51 Div who rest and concentrate for the attack. No contact is made with the enemy except at FARM BUILDINGS around GERBINI, and occasional shelling and mortaring. We patrol vigorously by day and night, culminating night 1/2 AUG in a raid by B Coy on LANDOLINA 7474, sptd by arty. Unfortunately rt hand Pl lost direction and missed the barrage. Only Capt B.G. Widnell MC and one section get into the enemy positions and this section withdrew after Capt Widnell had been wounded. Capt Widnell could not be brought back and is reported 'Missing'. An extensive search later showed no signs of him. |
