Entry | 0500hrs. Sitrep to Bde - "a quiet night" - is immediately followed by enemy mortar and automatic fire. Stray ITALIAN Ps/W continue to come in during the morning including one Ruthenian. 1000hrs. Brigadier L.M. Campbell VC. DSO.TD. arrives at Bn HQ. 1200hrs. A Coy report enemy moving in small bodies round both flanks. Mortar and automatic fire increases and RA O.P. takes on a number of targets. Afterwards we learned that two 88mm GERMAN guns were destroyed by 91st Fd Regt RA. 1300hrs. Bn HQ comes under Mortar and automatic fire and four R.35 FRENCH Tanks try to rush straight down the Road: one is knocked out by A Coy by Hawkins Mines, bren and grenades, and two by 6-pdr A.Tk Gun of 5 Pl: the fourth tank breaks through and is eventually destroyed by Sherman Tanks in FLORIDIA after inflicting casualties on men and vehs of 6 D.L.I. 1430hrs. RIO 6 D.L.I., 151 Bde, 50 Div arrives with Advance Party and at 1700 hrs take over by 6 D.L.I. is complete. 2 WILTS move to Assembly Area due EAST of SOLARINO. 1845hrs. Bn moves by March Route to area SOUTH of PRIOLO, arriving at 0145hrs 13 July, everyone being very tired. |
