Entry | Patrol to BUNNY BAY observed 4 JAP Patrols inlc 1 party with picks and shovels lightly equipped thought to be mine laying. Contacted 2 of patrol, engaged both. Claim 1 killed 7 wounded. Own casualties 1 killed 6 wounded - previously reported. Further report from BUNNY. During initial attacks 0340hrs and 0415hrs night 04/05 May claim 2 killed 9 wounded. Cutting of bamboo was heard in chaung to EAST for stretchers. During day 05 until Enemy cleared More casualties inflicted 7 bodies recovered (1 Offr 6 O.Rs) One obscured indentity disc Remainder No indentification. Enemy equipment good condition Steel Helmets, Kharki uniforms with Pockets, long drill putties O.Rs leather leggines, Offrs. leather belt pouches 30rds either side water bottles slung. Food. Each man had groundsheet rolled in blanket fashion containing Rice, Mess Tins, Chopsticks etc. No Packs. Condition of men very Fit well fed, average age 23/24 yrs appeared to be 6 to 7 days unshaven. Booty 1 L.M.G. 1 English T.S.MG. With Jap bayonet strapped on 5 rifles and bayonets. Note - Japs appeared to have carried considerable number of grenades. Had not dug-in very deeply but had made excellent use of cover. Total Enemy casualties claimed 9 killed 18 wounded. Own casualties 3 B.O.Rs killed. Wounded 1 B.O. 19 B.O.Rs. Fresh Coy taken over posn. 0350hrs. 0350 to 0530hrs BUNNY hvly engaged by mortar M.G. and L.M.G. Grenade S.A. fire. A party of about 30 to 40 Japs and Jifs combined Approached and fired from South East and South West. 0600hrs Own casualties reported killed 2 BORs wounded 1 BO and 8 BORs. 0630hrs. Fwd Eastern Pl cut off. Telephone cut. Coy Comds Patrol endeavoured to make contact, found Enemy covering collar between the two positions. Enemy engaged but patrol forced to withdraw. 3 BORs wounded. Western Pl sent to contact cut-off Pl by alterbative route. This was successful. Contact being made. Casualties in Cut-Off Pl 1 BOR killed 5 wounded. 0730hrs. Snipers reported in area Pt 465443. Patrol sent to clear area. 1020hrs. Patrol returned reported that No snipers now in area. 3 Japs with L.M.G. observed at Pt 467437 also 2 at Pt 466435. 1030hrs. 1 Pl C Coy sent to BUNNY to clear Enemy pocket of resistance. 1100hrs. 2 Carriers and S.B. squads despatched to TEMPLE area Pt 472447. 1210hrs. C Coy Pl on BUNNY attack timed to 1300hrs. Mortars to bring H.E. down from 1300hrs and F.O.O. to engage area. Attack successful see Sheet 2. 1230hrs. 1 Pl B Coy as stop to area Pt 4724470.
