Entry 0800 hrs. Heavy arty concentration prior to attack on HUMP and CAMEL by B & D coys. Over 100 guns used in concentration, accurate fire stripped both hills of cover. All located positions hit. Carrier Pl to accompany B Coy. 0855 hrs. Carr Pl and one Pl B Coy attack CAMEL and occupied it at 0900 hrs. A number of enemy caught in chaung behind feature apparently withdrawing. Lt C NEWTON killed three enemy and was himself wounded (badly) 2/Lt JUDGE wounded. 0900 hrs. D Coy attack on HUMP held up by heavy fire and grenades when near crest. Positions previously unlocated opened up having survived fearce barrage and Tank support. 1045 hrs. Further attacks by D Coy driven back on reaching false crest. Extremely effect support given by 25 DGNS. 1200 hrs. D Coy withdrew to Chaung to enable Tanks to further batter their objectives. B Coy ordered to assist D Coy as their coy objective could not be taken while enemy still held HUMP. 2/13 FF Rif captured TWINS but forced to withdraw after two attacks on OVAL. They sustained fairly heave casualties. 1245 hrs. D Coy and one Pl B Coy assault HUMP. Posn occupied after casualties inflicted on D Coy and the enemy. HUMP under heavy mortar fire. 1300-1600 hrs. HUMP shelled and mortared by enemy. 1600 hrs. HUMP still subjected to heavy mortar fire. RA in support gives counterblast to try and stop Jap from mortaring. 1630 hrs. C Coy ordered to relieve D Coy on HUMP. 1700 hrs. HUMP still under intensse mortar fire. Change over of coys postponed for 1 hr. 1930 hrs. C Coy took over at 1915 hrs. and are now consolidating and preparing posns against counter attack. Total casualties on days fighting 8 killed and wounded. Enemy 46 killed positive, many wounded.
