Entry Patrol under CAPT. WATTIS observed enemy area TUNNEL, ordered to proceed and investigate further. Two pls A Coy., CAPT CANNINGS, LIEUT. BUTTON and 2/Lt RICHARDS moved to 429437. One Pl to take over from B Coy Pl and one Pl to occupy TUNNEL area if unoccupied. One section of carriers moved in relief of Cpl Hamilton section and on reaching 429434, found no signs of occupation. Patrol moved fwd to 430430 and still saw no signs of occupation. BORs of CAPT. WATTIS' patrol returned and reported that tunnel area was occupied, patrol attempted to reach 424428 but when within10 yards of crest was heavily engaged by automatic and rifle fire. CAPT. WATTIS wounded. Patrol unable to recover him owing to heavy fire. 9 Pl A Coy under LIEUT. BUTTON moved back to lay-back posn at 428453.
