The following letter dated 21/9/18 received from the GOC 50th Division:- "I wish to thank all ranks for their excellent behaviour while at Martin Eglise. Being placed in the vicinity of a large town after three years in Salonica it might well have been otherwise. The Base Commandant in a letter received today says:- "You have left a legacy that will last to the end of the War in the admiration and respect of the French people for the British Army due to the model behaviour of your splendid Division". This is borne out by the Sous Prefet who writes;- "Pendant tout votre sejour dans l'arrondissment relations les plus courtoises et les plus ammeables n'ont cesse d'exister entre vos soldats et les officers de votre Division et la population Dieppoise, que conservera de vous un souvenier encor parfait que celui quelle conserve du sejour des soldats du 20th Corps Francais in 1916. "I feel confident that this high standard of behaviour and consideration for the French will always be maintained wherever the 50th Division may go". Sd. A C Jackson, Major General Commanding 50th Division |
