Location | Greece, DOVA TEPE Sector |
Entry | Midnight. Weather fine. Strength. 21 Officers 764 OR. Detached 10 Officers 115 OR. 1 OR rejoined from Hospital, 1 OR from detachment, 8 OR to detachment. Observation. Nothing to report. Patrols. 2nd Lieut HARE and 4 OR left our lines at 1645, reaching BORO HUT at 1850 and BREST BRIDGE at 1930. The position of the enemy post was unoccupied. The patrol took up a tactical position on the left bank of the HODZA SUJU which kept the STRAND and BREST BRIDGE under observation. Men could be heard talking in HODZA REDOUBT and a patrol was heard going from BREST BRIDGE to BREST. The patrol returned at 2030 without encountering the enemy. Memo of Patrols sent out on 11th: A patrol of 4 Officers (CAPT LAW I/C) and 2 NCO's left our lines at 0700 and reached BREST MILL at 0845. The Mill was unoccupied and one officer climbed a poplar to take bearings. At 0910 CAPT LAW and 1 NCO went on to reconnoitre ASH FORD and to get a closer view of HODZA REDOUBT. They crossed the river at a point 200' W.S.W. of ASH FORD and went on towards the REDOUBT. After advancing about 300' cover began to get scarce, so a rough sketch was made of the redoubt. The party then went back to the river and went along it until ASH FORD was reached. Here they again went towards the redoubt keeping near the track. The party got on to the slope without seeing any sign of the enemy. This end of the redoubt is certainly unoccupied by day. The party then returned down the track to ASH FORD. There is a small trench on left of track (looking from HODZA) with the parapet facing the enemy. There were a great many footprints on the enemy's side of the river at the FORD but not many on our side. In two places on our side the grass was much beaten down as if the enemy had a post there. After examining the ford the party rejoined the main body at 1050 and the whole patrol returned via POPOVO, reaching our lines at 1310. Only the left hand side of the REDOUBT appears to be held and this has wire one bay thick and about 4ft high running nearly all round it. On 11th Sept 1 Officer and 9 OR left Right Coy HQRs and proceeded via POPOVO PEAK track, KARADZALI and CLAPHAM COMMON to FOUNTAIN near BROKEN BRIDGE. Taking 2 men Lt GOLDIE went on to far end of orchard 300' N.W. of BROKEN BRIDGE where a good view of intervening country to BULAMAC was obtained. No visible obstacle been seen. No signs of the enemy were met with. Patrol reached our lines at 1200. Memo for 8th Sept. 1 Sgt and 30 OR with 1 L.G. left our lines at 0715 reaching MUD CROSSING at 0910. From here a party of 1 NCO and 6 men proceeded to BREST CLUMP, rejoining the main body at GREEN CROSSING. At BREST CLUMP no sign of the enemy having been in the neighbourhood for some time was observed. The patrol returned to our lines at 1230 hours. |
