Entry Midnight. Weather fine. Strength. 26 Officers 903 OR. Detached 7 Officers 76 OR. 1 OR (temp attd 79th M.G. Coy) to Hospital, 1 OR struck off. Col W.L ROCKE C.M.G. rejoined unit from leave. Lieut JAMES and 1 OR rejoined from detachment. 2nd Lieut HARDY joined unit. Observation. Men seen going in and out of dug out in small piece of trench at foot of NOSE. These men appeared to come out, fire at some object, and then go back. At 0945 our artillery dropped two shells in the trench.. These men immediately jumped out and ran to another. At 1815 a small column of smoke was seen coming out of dug out. Movement at intervals on NOSE and BOYAU HILL. The men observed carried no rifle nor equipment. Some were wearing dark trousers and white shirts, others light grey coats and trousers and brown leggings. Shelling. Nil Memo. In the Brigade Recreational Training Competition held at CAUSICA the Battalion teams gained the following places; Musketry - Second, L.Guns - First and Third, Bombing - Third. 8 teams competed in each event. Results. HANTS 1 1st; 1 3rd; DEVONS 2 2nds; D.C.L.I. 1 1st; WILTS 1 1st, 1 2nd and 2 3rds.
