C Coy. 12.6.1917 105957 Pte CROSS G.T. (RAMC, attached) 2 OR to Hospital. Observation. Night. AL4 lightly shelled at 2130. Enemy patrol threw a bomb on GRAND PITON at 2340. Day. At 0615 enemy shelled camp of L6 Garrison with heavy howitzers. About 60 shells fell all round camp and on bivouacs. Men were got into B.Ts in time and there were no casualties but some kit and equipment were damaged. At 0840 left of F.T.L6 was shelled, two bays damaged. Enemy continued the bombardment with 5.9 and smaller calibre guns throughout the morning. Telephone lines were cut. There were several bursts of M.G. fire from Machine Gun Hill during morning. Enemy put 12 shrapnel on following points during shelling, apparently registering CHAPEAU DE GENDARME, GRAND PITON, DOUBLE HILL; also in ravines between these three hills and two shells between AL4 and L6. |
