Regiment | 7th Wiltshire |
---|---|
Location | Greece, DOIRAN Sector |
Entry | 6 pm. Weather fine. Strength. 30 Officers 924 OR Detached 13 Officers 104 OR. Lieut Knott to Hospital 6 OR struck off strength 3 OR to detachment (2 to 70th Infy Bde, 1 to MG School). Observation. Night. L.Cpl Burke and one man crawled out to new enemy trench behind rocks in front of Lake Group running out a wire to connect up with a telephone wire found in this trench running back to Bulgar main line. At 2230 fire was opened from B2 with rifle and rifle grenades and several bombs were thrown. Men cheered and very lights were sent up. An operator was stationed with the Brigade interpreter in the SADDLE at the end of the line tapping the enemy wire with the object of picking up any messages sent by enemy front line to his supports or HQrs when this demonstration began. Nothing, however, was heard. The enemy replied to our fire at once firing about 100 shots and sending up Verry lights. The fire never increased so that it is probable that the supports did not come up. No MG opened fire but two batteries opened fire about 10 minutes after the demonstration began, a mountain gun battery and a 77mm battery. No damage was done. Day. Enemy observation balloon up on right of GRAND COURONNE from 0930 till 0953 and again at 1010 till 1025. Enemy aeroplane over our lines at 1410 and 1440. Day quiet. |
