Entry | Enemy opened attack at 8a.m adopting at once outflanking movements on our right flank, he was entirely held for some hours and attempted no frontal attacks. At 11.30a.m throwing in new troops he worked round our right flank and we withdrew by a rearguard and flankguard action, suffering heavily at the time from shellfire (including gas shells and rifle grenades and cross fire from machine guns. At 1p.m withdrawal to trenches W of LOUPAERT Wood where a stand was made. Troops on our right continued to fall back and a further withdrawal to a defensive position E. of IRLES was made. Troops on our right flank had now completely given way and after fighting a delaying action at this point, a further withdrawal was made through MIRAUMONT to E. of PUISSIEUX where an outpost line was established. 3 Battalions of the Brigade being formed into a composite Battalion. Transport moved from IRLES to ACHIET LE PETIT arriving 9a.m, moving again at 12 noon to BUCQUOY, and at 3/30p.m to PUISSIEUX.
