Entry | 'A' & 'B' Coys joined at midnight 19/20 and joined up in Assembly positions about OPAQUE WOOD. Although shell holes, broken strands of wire and fallen trees made OPAQUE WOOD a difficult obstacle to traverse, the proximity of the barrage line and the possibility of the enemy Listening Posts discovering unusual movement rendered it inadvisable to assemble South of Wood. It was therefore decided to assemble in file along direction tape running S. through the WOOD and to deploy on emerging into the normal form of Attack with each Company in 4 lines. The plan worked well but owing to the marshy and broken nature of ground in front of OPAQUE WOOD the deployment proved a more difficult and slower matter than was anticipated. The EMBANKMENT Trench leading to Assembly position was packed with troops and there was some promiscuous shelling and the night was very dark and had the ground been heavy the Assembly could never have been completed to time. The success of the Assembly was largely due to the careful reconnaissance of the ground carried out by each Platoon leader concerned. |
