Entry | Draft of 16 B.O.R joined Battalion for duty. Battalion night Operations were carried out. The Battalion was practised in march discipline, special formations and the assault all movements being performed very satisfactorily. In order to carry out the utmost training possible, the two companies in Headquarters camp were struck off all working parties, their whole line being devoted to training. The necessary work on the defensive line was carried out by the two forward companies, who in addition were able to a considerable amount of specialist training. This scheme proved entirely successful, a great improvement in the skill and turn out of the men being noticeable. During the month, a grenade range, miniature range, a 300 yards Rifle range, an assault course and three standard bombing pits were dug, and proved invaluable. The weather generally was much cooler than last years. Local produce in the form of sheep, fresh fruit, vegetables, fodder etc was obtainable in good quantities, several consignments being sent down to KIFRI for consumption there. Local inhabitants appeared quite friendly. Sickness during the month was practically the same as in June, number evacuated being 2.9%. The chief cause of sickness were Septic sores, fever (including several cases of malaria) and a few cases of tonsillitis. Towards the end of the month quinine parades were ordered each man taking 15 grains on four days of the week making a total of 60 grains weekly. A distinct decline in the number of fever cases reporting was almost immediately noticeable. R. Ivor Scorer Major Comdg 5th (S) Bn The Wiltshire Regt. Field 1.8.18.
