War Diary

1918-01-22
Regiment 5th Wiltshire
Location Mesopotamia, At Ain Lailah
Entry Work on positions and road completed. 8 Turkish deserters surrendered. GENERAL The Arabs in the neighbourhood of AIN LAILAH were of the AZZA tribe and appeared quite friendly although distant shots were fired during the first day or two after our arrival, - these ceased as the confidence of the Arabs grew. MORALE Desertions to the detachment were very numerous, and it was especially noticed that Turks from the 2nd DIVN commenced deserting almost immediately after their taking over QARAH TAPPAH - ABU GHARAIB area. Deserters were poorly clad and all complained of bad rations.
