Entry | Battalion left bivouac at 6.45a.m and proceeded over RIVER NAHRIN and formed up ready to move. At 7a.m the Battalion proceeded North towards KARA TEPE with orders to attack the TURKISH position there. Passing to the WEST of KARA TEPE halt was made and turning EAST the Battalion advanced in artillery formation on foothills under shrapnel fire. WILTS on LEFT, SOUTH WALES BORDERERS on RIGHT with 8th CHESHIRES in reserve. We captured and occupied ridges taking 9 prisoners, 1 Killed and 1 wounded, our casualties were 1 Officer 2Lt E.G.W. COLLINS and 23 other ranks wounded 4 other ranks Killed. Headquarters was formed in valley of ridges captured, about 3000 yards NORTH of KARA TEPE. The attack was carried out in splendid style the men going forward with great dash over most difficult country and driving the enemy from successive ridges in irresistible fashion. Although it was our first experience of hill fighting an excellent Knowledge of the necessary tactics was shown by Company Commanders who frequently reorganised before pushing on to unknown ground. Towards evening a definite line on commanding ground was taken up. B, C and D Companies forward with 'A' Company in reserve at Battalion Headquarters. BRIG. GENERAL A.C. LEWIN CB, CMG, DSO riding up expressed his admiration for the manner in which the Regiment had conducted itself throughout the day. |
