Regiment 5th Wiltshire
Location Mesopotamia, In Bivouac [en-route for Tulul-en-Nar]
Entry Moved up to support Cheshires and Borderers in their attack. Violent dust storms raged, through which, the situation could not be seen at all clearly. The initial attack was most successful but owing to length of advance subsequently carried out by Cheshires and Borderers these two Battalions were left with insufficient ammunition to repel a strong Turkish counter attack, and were forced to retire before superior numbers. The arrival of the WILTSHIRES however eased the situation, a definite time being established, the counter attack being broken up, and the Cheshires and Borderers being sent back to reorganise. 2nd Lieut. W.S. GREGORY was killed and 16 OR's wounded. Capt. M.W. Coode and 2Lt. J.T. Snelgar with draft of 21 OR's joined for duty. Capt. M.W. Coode assumed command of 'D' Coy. R.H. Haseldine Lt. Col. Comdg 5 (S) Bn Wiltshire Regt. The Field 1.5.17.
