Regiment 5th Wiltshire
Location Mesopotamia, Beit Aiessa sic [Bait Isa]
Entry Dug all night and returned to Masons Mounds Camp in early morning. 6/5/16 R.H. Haseldine Major Cmdg 5/Wilts Regt. Special Orders of the Day In connection with the action at EL HANNAH on 5-4-1916. From Lt. Col Brownrigg A.A. and Q.M.C. 13th Division. "The G.O.C. desires to express his admiration at the magnificent bearing of 5.4.16 the Division in action yesterday. The dash and resolution shown by all ranks was worthy of the highest tradition of the British Army and has already earned the well merited thanks of the Commander in Chief and Corps Commander. To have driven the enemy out of trenches extending for a depth of six miles in one day is an achievement which will fill our comrades in KUT with renewed determination to hold out gallantly until we have effected their relief. The G.O.C. sympathises deeply with the losses necessarily incurred but let us avenge those who have fallen so gloriously. Forward the 13th Division." The following message was received by Corps Commander from Army Commander 6-4-16 yesterday. "My heartiest congratulations to you and all troops under command, especially to 13th Division to whom please convey my warm appreciation and admiration of their splendid gallantry and much regret the losses that had to be incurred and my sincerest sympathies are with the wounded whom I trust are doing well." The Viceroy of India sent the following message. "Please convey to General Gorringe and his troops my heartiest congratulations on what they have achieved."
