Regiment | 5th Wiltshire |
---|---|
Location | Gallipoli, S.E. of Suvla Bay |
Entry | Fire trenches Weather sunny but still cold Conditions considerably improved, though deficiencies of kit due to flood especially blankets was very detrimental to conditions of men, a number of whom suffered from swollen feet and limbs. Pte HOSKINS of D Coy was shot through the heart by a sniper. A patrol of officers and men went out to report on activities of the enemy but no working parties were seen, nor people encountered. Party supplied for Brigade fatigue. Conditions by now improving. The Following message was published on 28.11.15 Message from 9th Corps Commander and 13th Div. Commander Please convey to troops. Corps. "Corps Commander wishes his warm appreciation of their high standard of discipline and morale" conveyed to the troops. Div. "Tell the officers n.c.o's and men how much I admire their splendid courage grit and determination in facing so resolutely the vile weather. This fortitude will add a fresh page of heroism not only to the annals of their fine old Regiments whose honoured names they bear, but also to the record of the British Army and shows that the rank of the 13th Division contains men animated as of old by the bulldog character of our race. Let them remember that Turks are even in worse plight and that rifle and machine fire brought to bear on them will completely demoralise them. Am trying to send more coal and coke and am authorising issue of rum tonight." signed General Maude. In conveying these messages the Brigadier-General wishes to express his deep appreciation of the fine spirit and determination shown by all ranks of the Bde under the present very trying circumstances. He feels confident that this same spirit and devotion to duty will continue to animate all ranks until success crowns our efforts. Remarks: Message from Corps, Division and Brigade to troops after heavy floods and storm. J.W. Greany Capt a/Adjt. 5th Wilts Regt. 1.12.15. Gallipoli |
