Entry | Reserve & Support trenches immediately on right of Fire an Support Trenches occupied by 5th Wilts 30.9.15 to 14.10.15 Today the weather was very mild and we were not shelled. At 2p.m the Bn commenced to take over a new series of trenches previously held by the 8th Cheshire Regiment, 4th South Wales Borderers and 8th Royal Welsh Fusiliers. The trenches allotted to us are known as B58, B59 right bay of B60, S59 & R58. At 2p.m we relieved 8th R.W Fusiliers in B59 right bay of B60 and support trench in rear of B59 via 'Brecon Road'. At 2.30p.m we relieved the 8th Cheshire's and 4th S.W. Borderers in B58B via Brecon Road and support trench in rear of B59. At 3p.m we relieved 8th Cheshire's in S59 and R58 both via Brecon Road. 'A' and 'C' companies occupied the firing line, 'D' coy the support trench and 'B' coy occupied the reserve trench. The position now occupied by the Bn is a position with its left resting on the right of the position held by us from Sept 30th until Oct 14th. The frontage is about 230 yards. The adjoining diagram shows more or less the nature of our trenches. 'A' and 'C' companies occupied the firing line B58 and B59, 'D' Coy S60 and 'B' Coy S59. Note: at this point on the page there is a small penned diagram. Also on the 31st the following is noted [It should have been stated under 28.10.15 that the 4th S.W. Borderers are on our right and the 8th R Welsh Fusiliers are on our left.] |
