War Diary

1915-07-22
Regiment 5th Wiltshire
Location Gallipoli
Entry Fire trenches 6a.m Carrying on with working parties as yesterday. 3p.m Burst of rapid fire from our left, and some gun-firing. Heard later about 300 Turks attacked 39th Bde in a very half-hearted manner, and were beaten off with heavy loss. Weather cooler. British aeroplane dropped a bomb in our lines 130 casualties. ACB Remarks: See attached sketch See Order d/22/7/15 by OC 8th A.C. attached 8th Army Corps Order - Special Gallipoli Peninsula 22.7.15 The enemy have once more declared their intention of driving us into the sea. They have tried this before and have always been beaten off with heavy loss. The time they have chosen, which is apparently any time after sunset to-night, is an unfortunate one for them, as we have now a far greater force here than on any previous occasion. They will probably shell our trenches heavily, but we are prepared for that. And they may try, as they have done before, to overwhelm us by sheer weight of numbers, only to be shot down before they reach the parapets of our trenches, or bayonetted if they got there. The Lieutenant-General Commanding looks to all ranks to give such account of themselves as will, this time finally, beak the power of the Turks opposed to us and open the way to the victory which they have fought so magnificently during the past months. H.C. Street Brigadier-General G.S. 8th Army Corps.
