Entry No 1 Coy rejoined the Battalion and relieved a Coy of the 2/4th Hants on HILL 1220. Relief completed 0030 (17.4.18). A Coy of 2/4th Hants relieved No 3 Coy our right post on the ridge N of WADI arak (V12 b27). Relief completed 2115. Our position WADI EMIR inclusive - HILL 1220 - inclusive, 2/4th Hants on right, 1/5th Somerset L.I. on left. Appendix 2 - Disposition of Battalion WADI EMIR Right Post 1 Coy V12 a55 Centre Post 1 Coy V5 d92 Left Post 1 Coy V11 a27 Post in saddle between Centre and Left Posts 1 Platoon V11 a66 HQ. Reserve, 1 Coy less 1 Platoon V11 b24 Appendix 3 The System of Defence BY NIGHT. From Right to Left Detached Post, 1 platoon in terraced fields. No 1 Outpost Coy, 1 Company (less 1 platoon) with 2 platoons in firing line and 1 platoon in support. No 2 Outpost Company. 4 Platoons in the firing line. No 3 Outpost Company. 2 Platoons in the firing line, 2 platoons in support. Reserve. 1 Coy at Battalion HQ. COVER. Each post entrenched where possible, otherwise sangered. OBSTACLES. French wire in front of each post and in gaps. COMMUNICATIONS. 1 main track behind centre of position with well defined paths to the posts from it. Telephone to each Company HQ and with Battalions on right and left. BY DAY. The positions are chosen so that shell fire may be avoided and yet the force can get to its position before the enemy could cross a crest. Each Outpost company finds an Inlying Picquet of one Platoon which would be ready to man the day positions at a moment's notice. Each Outpost Company finds an Observation Post be day which connected with Battalion Headquarters by telephone. Company Headquarter, moving up at night, take over the telephone. RANGES. Taken to prominent objects. SECONDARY POSITIONS. These have been prepared to support a possible retirement. ARTILLERY SUPPORT. Arrangements made to put a barrage on line shewn.
