Regiment | 1/4th Wiltshire |
---|---|
Location | Palestine, In attack |
Entry | 0600. The Battalion moved out to attack SHEIKH SUBIH ridge, but owing to the ridge in S26 c and d not being taken, the Battalion was enfiladed by MG's from the right and at the same time heavily shelled by 5.9 guns from the front. To advance under such cnditions meant very heavy losses before the attack could be launched against our objective, and the Battalion halted, taking what cover it could. In the afternoon orders were received to support the 2/3rd Gurkha Rifles, who were attacking HILL 26 (S26 c and d). Three Companies were sent off for this purpose and as it meant a move to the flank, more casualties were suffered. The 58th Rifles and 2/5th Hants went to the help of the 2/3rd Gurkhas and succeded in getting on to HILL 26 but were driven off by shell fire. The three Coys of Wilts then fell back and a position was taken up across the head of the WADI ARAK, the Battalion occupying that position for the night. Under cover of darkness, parties went out and fetched in a number of the wounded, but were shelled while doing so. During the night Turkish bombers came up to an OP and one of our men was killed. Subsequently three dead Turks were found lying around him. |
