Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location France, Richbourg St Vaast
Entry GOC Division visited Battalion headquarters in morning and discussed a proposed Battalion attack on MAUDLIN TRENCH with Col King. Later this was enlarged into a Brigade attack and fixed for the 21st. Col King decided to make a small stunt that night in order to bring up the right flank to a suitable jumping off line. Accordingly at 10pm two platoons of B coy under 2nd Lts DAVIE and VIRGIN went over under a light shrapnel barrage. On the right 2nd Lt VIRGIN progressed favourably but on the left 2nd Lt DAVIE was badly held up by a thick belt of wire which was mostly covered with vegetation. Hostile machine guns prevented him cutting the wire and he was forced to withdraw. 2nd Lt DAVIE was shot through the neck and died almost immediately. Under orders from the Commanding Officer the right flank was withdrawn and original jumping off positions re-established.
