War Diary

1917-08-30
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Belgium, Trenches
Entry Quiet day. Night of 30/31st about 10.30pm after an intense barrage on our front line the enemy raided our right front company ("D"). After a stout resistance with Lewis guns under heavy shelling and MG fire the enemy penetrated some of our posts and took nine prisoners, one of whom escaped in no man's land & made his way back to our lines. Heavy losses are thought to have been inflicted on the enemy, who are identified as being the 22nd Pioneer Battn by dead bodies found near our wire. Our losses were 1 killed 14 wounded 9 missing. After this the Battn was relieved by the 19th Manchesters. (NB The relief was in progress during the raid.) Battalion moved back to the reserve line.
