War Diary

1917-04-28
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location France, Trenches
Entry At 3.0am the Brigade on our right (64th) attacked and bombed down the HINDENBURG LINE to the South-East. At 4.25am the 1st Army attacked. Shortly after 4.0am the artillery covering our front opened a barrage fire on the enemy's front and creeping towards his rear and then coming back again to his front line. This caused the enemy to put down his barrage, which was extremely heavy, on our front, causing a few casualties. The enemy continued to shell our front line and the valley in rear intermittently throughout the day. Reconnoitring parties of the 6th NORTHAMPTONSHIRE Regt arrived at Battalion Headquarters at about mid-day, and made arrangements for relief. The relieving companies commenced arriving at 10.0pm, and relief was complete by midnight. Before relief "D" Company, in accordance with instructions received from Brigade, pushed out an advance post at 0.31.c.7.3. This post was handed over on relief.
