War Diary

1916-12-16
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location France, Trenches
Entry During the morning the 3" trench mortars cut wire round Sap. Enemy retaliated on trench 137. At 9.56pm 2/Lieut RMP BEAVEN, 2/Lieut RE GIBBS and 11 other ranks made a feint raid on Sap and after a three minute bombardment of the sap they advanced towards it and bombed. The enemy put a heavy barrage on our front line. This enabled the 2nd Yorkshire Regt's raiding party on our right to enter the enemy's trenches with practically no enemy artillery against them at all. Both raids were very successful. Our only casualty was 2/Lieut RE GIBBS who was slightly wounded in the forearm.
