War Diary

1916-06-27
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location France, Trenches
Entry 'X' Day Bombardment of enemy continues successfully with little retaliation. We issue a smoke barrage in the early morning, this time drawing a weak rifle fire from the enemy which could hardly be called 'rapid'. In the evening three Hun aeroplanes make an appearance over MONTAUBAN & are quickly chased back to their homes by our many planes which are up at the moment. At dusk the Battalion is relieved by the 18th Kings Liverpool Regt in the line and withdraws to a line of trenches known as BATTLE STREET running East to West between OXFORD and CAMBRIDGE COPSES, about 400 yds behind front line. At about 10pm two Zeppelins are seen over Maricourt going EAST. During the morning two Hun deserters of the 62nd Regt surrender to our two front companies.
