Home of the Infantry Regiments of Berkshire and Wiltshire

War Diary

1916-02-17
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location France, Carnoy
Entry Weather still bad and all work used on cleaning trenches of mud and water and holding up sides. At 11.30 am opposite 'C' coys lines a man was brought in and recognised as Pte STEWART missing from patrol since 11th inst. He was in a very weak state from starvation and exposure and could answer few questions. It was gathered he had been captured by a German wiring party, but had slipped away, and after much difficulty regained our lines. OC 4/CAMERONS and 5/BLACK WATCH reconnoitred our lines with a view to taking over. Hostile artillery tried hard to damage transport and ration party without success.
