Regiment | 2nd Wiltshire |

Location | France, Rue De L'Epinette Trenches |
Entry | All day long the whole area occupied by the Battalion was heavily shelled with all varieties of high explosives and shrapnel in bursts of approximately 1/2 an hour, when a heavy shell about every 8 or 9 seconds. Under telephone instructions 'C' Coy was brought up with the intention of attacking L11 and L12. But in the meantime the two Coys of the Camerons had been driven out of L8 & came back (without arms or equipment) using the wet ditches as cover, in which they were often up to their necks in water. The whole Battn then retired. During the afternoon the Canadian Highlanders attacked and part of them passed through the Battalion. The Canadians advanced the line to about line M6 to farm on La Quinque Rue, The 2/Wilts were ordered to relieve the 2nd S. Staffords and 8th Royal Scots, with two Coys on the left. But as the 2nd Staffords had suffered very heavy casualties during the day between M3 &M5 the CO decided after the relief, to withdraw 'D' Coy who had first relieved the Staffords to their old trench and to replace them by 'C' Coy. This was done. 'D' Coy was now so placed that it could reinforce either 'A' & 'B' Coys or 'C' Coy in case of attack. Lt Schultz who also brought up with his platoon occupied from M5 to M6. |
