Entry 1a.m. enemy starts a heavy gas bombardment which lasts until 5a.m. when he commenced to attack the forward Battn line held by the 8th Div. 7.30a.m. Orders received to move forward to cover retirement of front line troops and Capt Priestley with 3 Coys takes up position further forward. 10.15a.m. Battn again moves forward an holds line in front of BOUFFIGNEREUX. 11.30a.m. - 3.30p.m. Line held as follows, D left Coy, C B A 1 platoon of C Coy only under 2nd Lieut Parkin [?] in front line, remaining 2 platoons of C support D. Enemy shelling constantly Battn HQ, M Gun fire continually sweeping roads and tracks to HQ and front line. Supplies of SAA were however maintained. 4.15p.m. Capts Priestley & Arnott report situation to CO at Battn HQ. Capt Priestley wounded, still remains at duty. 5.30p.m. Enemy attacked when owing to greatly superior forces the Battn was compelled to retire and splitting up into small parties slowly withdrew, fighting rearguard actions. Lieut Col Furze DSO, MC, was killed, a like Capt Brooke RAMC. Capts Arnott & Priestley both believed to wounded and prisoners. Lieuts Sames, H Reid, E Duley [?] were wounded and evacuated , also 2nd Lieuts H Anderson & A M Reid. The 7th Inf Bde came under orders of the 8th Div. Odd detachments were re-organised and sent on to keep the line intact.
