War Diary

1918-03-11
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location France, Achiet Le Grand
Entry (11th - 16th) Training was carried out each morning throughout the week 11th - 16th inclusive, particular attention being paid to the musketry training of the Coys. Firing practice upon the range near ACHIET LE PETIT and upon the short ranges in the valley E of LOGEAST WOOD was carried out daily by two Coys, except on the 12th - the day allotted to the Battn for bathing at ACHIET LE PETIT. The latter part of each morning was devoted to Platoon and Coy attack exercises: all ranks, in particular, were trained to act upon surprise orders and officers were on occasion made casualties in to develop the initiative of the NCOs. All Lewis Gunners of the Battn were during the week tested in stoppages by the Lewis Gun Officers: men selected to form the Tump Line carrying parties of the Coys were daily given practice in the use of the Tump Line. The independent training of the Signallers and Snipers was proceeded with throughout the week. Recreational training, football and boxing, occupied the afternoons: on Thursday 14th the Battn played the 10th Cheshire Regt at "soccer" football and drew.
