Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location France, Favreuil
Entry (15th - 26th) The Battn remained at this Camp until the evening of the 26th. Very little training was possible during this time as the Battn was called upon to provide working parties almost every day. Upon days the 17th, 23rd and 25th the whole Btn worked upon the VAULX - MORCHIES reserve line while the Coys continued the digging of the trench, the fourth Coy wired the VAULX road. On other days parties were furnished for work at the Camps of the 25th DAC. In No 6 Camp itself, repairs to the huts, the flooring and windows were carried out, and greater protection against bombing was made for the huts by banking up earth against the walls of the huts. On the night of the 21st/22nd, parties from the Brigade were employed for wiring the HIRONDELLE VALLEY: this Battn was responsible for forming dumps of barbed wire in No Mans Land, preparatory to wiring which was undertaken by the 10th Cheshire Regt. In spite of a considerable amount of long range machine gun fire the task was performed with only one casualty No 9528 Pte Haskell W, wounded, but remained on duty. Parties had returned to Camp by 11.30p.m. 21st. On days upon which training was possible, parades were held upon the ground in the immediate vicinity of the Camp. The morning's work included elementary musketry, rapid loading practice, squad drill, bayonet fighting, games etc. Each Coy too was given the opportunity of a route march. A class for the instruction of NCO's (4 per Coy) was formed and held daily during the period under review. Lectures were given upon NCO's duties: Communication drill and the giving of detail fire arm and squad drill were practised, the whole being under the supervision of 2nd Lieut G T Morley MM. On the majority of the evenings Boxing Matches were held under Coy and Battn arrangements in the 25th Divisional Theatre by the Camp, and in addition a Boxing class was formed and held during the mornings and afternoons under the direction of 2nd Lieut J J Riddle. This was attended by five selected men from each Coy.
