Entry | (13th - 15th) The Battn remained in the line until the 15th. During these three days there was no incident of importance. There was no infantry enterprise by the enemy, and his artillery replied but weakly to our continuous shelling of his back areas. No target presented itself to our snipers and attention was mainly directed to active patrolling during the early part of the night. Several attempts were made to obtain an identification at MAGPIE'S NEST (D.13.b) but the hostile wire proved too strong. On each occasion the enemy's sentries were plainly seen. No hostile patrols were encountered. In the matter of work chief attention was paid to wiring: the wire was put out so as to form a flank defence to each post, in northern and southern sides. In the front line elephant shelters were constructed, and the trench deepened and fire stepped in places where it was necessary. On the night of the 14th/15th a new support line was dug, 150 yards in rear of the front line, N of HARROGATE AVENUE (C.18.d) On the evening of the 15th at dusk the Battn was relieved by the 4th S Staffs. Regt and after relief moved back into Bde Reserve at VAULX - VRAUCOURT. No casualties were sustained during relief. |
