War Diary

1917-11-11
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location France, Gorre
Entry (11th - 16th) During this period the Battn remained at GORRE in Bde Reserve. On the 11th a C of E parade service was held. On the other days working parties were provided for the 130th Coy RE chiefly for unloading stores : one party was required for the completion of a Bayonet Course. Parades were held under Coy arrangement for inspection of kit and for the making up of deficiencies whenever men were free from work, and the three platoon organization of a Coy was once more adopted, as the present strength of the Battn admitted of it. Use was made of a 200 yard range near LE QUESNOY for firing parties and of two small ranges in the wood adjoining GORRE CHATEAU. Otherwise little training was possible. One Coy on the 14th was able to hold a route march through LOCON, BETHUNE and BEUVRY. Owing to information obtained from prisoners of the 45th Inf Regt who stated that the enemy were proposing to raid our trenches on the GIVENCHY HILL during the following few nights. Special dispositions had to be made in the sector held by the 10th Cheshire Regt and on the afternoon of the 14th A Coy of this Battn had to move up into CALEDONIAN RD and PICCADILLY into a position of close support. Nothing untoward happened during the night of 14/15th and on the afternoon of 15th this Coy was relieved by D Coy, and returned to GORRE. On the evening of 15th B Coy held a concert. On the evening of the 16th Capt E M Gingell left the Battn to take up an appointment as Major on [sic] HQ of 8th Sherwood Foresters. During the six days at GORRE for the first time since January 1917 a Battn Officers Mess was in force.
