War Diary

1917-11-05
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location France, Givenchy
Entry (5th - 10th) Throughout this period the Battn remained in the line. The attitude of the enemy was very quiet and only two casualties was sustained during the tour. On the night of 4/5th a hostile relief was suspected and machine gun fire was directed upon CTs, roads and tramways in rear. Almost every day the Div artillery carried out wire cutting operations, often in conjunction with medium trench mortars along the Battn front. The Stokes mortars were usually employed in retaliation for hostile fire, and fired upon enemy front and support lines. The regimental snipers were offered more targets than usual, particularly on the 5th, 6th and 7th, when several hits were obtained. The enemy on the other hand showed little enterprise in this respect. His artillery retaliation to our wire cutting was generally directed upon the vicinity of GIVENCHY CHURCH. LOOP ROAD and NEW ROSE TRENCH in left Coy's sector were also shelled by 77mm and 4.2 shells. Patrols operated each night along the whole Battn front, mainly with the object of ascertaining the extent of the gaps made in the enemy's wire. No hostile patrols were encountered. On the 10th the Battn was relieved by the 10th Cheshire Regt and went into Bde Reserve at GORRE. The only casualties were sustained during the tour were :- 2nd Lieut S H White, wounded by a sniper on the 8th, died of wounds the following day. On the 9th, 1 other rank was wounded but remained at duty.
