Regiment | 1st Wiltshire |

Location | Belgium, [Westhoek] |
Entry | At about 2a.m. orders were issued by the 74th Bde for the Battn to move up and strengthen the line, putting two Coys in close support on the WESTHOEK Ridge and two Coys and HQ on the BELLEWAARDE Ridge. All remaining in the HALFWAY HOUSE dugout were collected and taken to the MENIN Road, the 2nd Lincolns arriving as the last man left. The carrying parties were met on the MENIN Road as they returned and Coys made their way independently to the positions allotted to them, A & B being on the WESTHOEK and C & D on the BELLEWAARDE Ridges. At 12.32p.m. orders were received to move the two Coys and HQ from the BELLEWAARDE Ridge to a position on the WESTHOEK Ridge in order to be in a position to hold up any attack from our right flank. One Coy was sent over in small parties but the Battn Commander in the front line at once sent back a message to the effect that he was not in any need of support. This was reported to Bde who agreed to the Two Coys being kept on the BELLEWAARDE Ridge. The Battn Commander in the line sent back the Coy who had gone up. During the night the 74th Bde was relieved by the 75th. At 10p.m. orders were received to send up 1 Coy in support from the BELLEWAARDE Ridge to the WESTHOEK Ridge. This was done but the OC 2nd S Lancs Regt who had relieved the Battn of the 74th Bde in the line refused to keep them up there as no cover was available and he was not in need of extra support. This was reported to Bde who finally agreed to the original disposition of 2 Coys on WESTHOEK and 2 on BELLEWAARDE Ridge. |
