War Diary

1917-08-02
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location Belgium, [Bellewaarde]
Entry During the night of 1st/2nd rations were brought up by the regimental pack pony convoy to a point immediately N of RDE [sic] Lake beyond which it was impossible to proceed. During the whole tour in the line Coys were obliged to send back carrying parties to this dump, and owing to the heavy rain and the marshy nature of the ground in the valley between the WESTHOEK and BELLEWAARDE Ridges, this was most exhausting and arduous work. The trenches were improved and deepened and the support line dug. During the day messages were received on several occasions from the Copy on the left to the effect that our own shells were dropping short and late in the afternoon from the right Coy as well. This was also reported by the units on the flanks, the 10th Cheshires on the left and 8th LN Lancs on the right. Hostile shelling was confined to the BELLEWAARDE Ridge and CHATEAU WOOD area; the front line and the valley were hardly shelled at all. The enemy exposed himself a great deal during the morning and it is thought that a relief must have been carried out. Our snipers were very active and soon obtained complete superiority. Forty-nine hits were reported during the day. Our casualties were 3 ORs killed and 9 ORs wounded.
