War Diary

1917-08-01
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location Belgium, [Westhoek]
Entry The Battn on this date was in the HALF WAY HOUSE Dugout. At noon orders were received to relieve the 1st Sherwood Foresters on the WESTHOEK Ridge. The Battn moved off by half platoons and on arriving in the neighbourhood of the BELLEWAARDE Lake such heavy hostile shelling was encountered as to render further movement impossible. The men were put in such cover as was available and remained there until 5p.m. when the shelling was less intensive. The relief was then proceeded with by very small parties. The position on the ridge was somewhat obscure, and we took over from men of the 1st Sherwood Foresters, 2nd West Yorkshire Regt and 2nd Lincolns. The relief was finally completed at about 10p.m., a line being taken up W of the village of WESTHOEK, 3 Coys being in the front line from (sheet HOOGE 1/10,000) J.7.b.8.3 to J.7.b.8.8 with A Coy in support. C Coy were on the left, B in the centre and D on the right. The casualties during this day were 5 killed and 26 wounded.
