Regiment | 1st Wiltshire |

Location | France, The Trenches |
Entry | An artillery and Stokes Mortar bombardment took place between 11a.m. and 12 noon, the objective being the enemy's wire, parapet, support line and CTs opposite the right company front. The retaliation was feeble and the whole of the Battn front line having previously been thinned out, there were no casualties from shelling. The shoot appeared to be effective in damaging the wire and parapet, and in the evening patrols were sent out from the right and centre companies to ascertain as far as possible the extent of the damage done. In the morning 2nd Lieut C L Usher was wounded by an enemy sniper while himself sniping. One man was also wounded 31592 Pte Light (D Coy). One man was wounded but remained at duty, 26645 Pte Rogers (A Coy). Two officers joined the Battn for duty: Lieut C Sainsbury, who had previously served with the 1st Battn, and Lieut M S G Bigwood who had done duty with the 2nd Battn It had become about this time quite a practice with the enemy to throw bombs into his own wire, not only after dark, but in daylight and it was considered that the enemy was engaged in instructing newly arrived drafts. |
